Volvo Trucks roadside help, dispatched nationwide
Road Rescue Network dispatches 24/7 mobile heavy repair and towing for Volvo Trucks. The fleet is overwhelmingly automated-transmission, which matters at the moment of a tow: the driveline comes out first. Powertrain and aftertreatment are shared with Mack, so diagnosis and parts are familiar to the same techs.
Who builds a Volvo Trucks, and why it changes the rescue
Volvo Trucks builds in Virginia and shares driveline engineering with Mack. The I-Shift automated transmission is standard across most of the range, and an automated manual cannot simply be put in neutral and dragged, so the driveline comes out before the truck moves any real distance.

What a rescuer has to know before they roll on a Volvo Trucks
These are the things that go wrong when a Volvo Trucks gets whichever truck was closest instead of the right one.
Automated transmissions make the driveline step mandatory
An automated manual gearbox is not a torque converter automatic, and towing with the drive axles turning spins internals that are not being lubricated. On a front-end tow the driveshaft comes out. It is routine, it takes a few minutes, and skipping it is how a tow becomes a transmission.
Shared powertrain with Mack
Engines and aftertreatment are closely related to Mack's, so a tech comfortable with one reads the other. Derates behave the same way and are handled the same way.
Aerodynamic VNL bodywork hides access and is not structural
The fairings and chassis skirts are fuel-saving panels, not recovery points. Load goes to rated frame points, and the panels are what an inexperienced operator damages while trying to hook up.
The other heavy-truck rule still applies
No air means the spring brakes are applied and have to be caged with the correct tool before the truck will move at all.
The Volvo Trucks calls we take
Heavy towing with driveline removal
Driveshaft pulled before a front-end tow so an automated transmission is not turned dry.
Aftertreatment and DEF
Fluid delivered, forced regenerations and derate faults addressed in place.
Air system repair
Leaks located and repaired so the truck can move under its own power.
Tire service and battery banks
Heavy tire positions with correct torque, and battery banks tested rather than only jumped.
How a Volvo Trucks has to be moved
Worth reading to whoever shows up, whether or not we sent them.
Remove the driveshaft before a front-end tow, because these are automated transmissions and turning them without lubrication causes damage. Cage the spring brakes before moving a truck with no air. Recovery load goes through rated frame points, never the aero panels.

Volvo Trucks roadside questions
Why does the driveshaft have to come out?
Because these use automated manual transmissions. Towing from the front with the drive axles rolling turns internals that are not being lubricated, and that damage costs far more than the few minutes it takes to pull the shaft. It is standard practice, not an upsell.
My VNL derated and lost power.
Almost always aftertreatment rather than engine damage. Exhaust fluid level or quality, or a filter that cannot complete a regeneration, cover most of them, and those are usually handled where you sit.
Can the operator hook to the side fairings?
No. They are fuel-saving panels and are not structural. Everything goes through rated frame points.
