Federal tread depth minimums

Federal safety regulations set 4/32 of an inch of tread on the steering axle and 2/32 on all other axles. Below that the vehicle is out of service at roadside — measured at the shallowest point, not the average.

Out-of-service criteria

Beyond tread depth, an inspector will place a vehicle out of service for exposed belt or cord, a visible bulge, a flat or audibly leaking tire, or an unsafe repair in the sidewall. Any one of those ends the trip where it stands.
