The Sandia Mountain grade on I-40 between Mile 167 and Mile 177, monsoon dust storms across the Rio Grande Valley, and the Balloon Fiesta freight surge every October define the operating envelope.

Freight through New Mexico is generated in large part by Sandia National Laboratories, Intel Corporation (Rio Rancho fab), Kirtland Air Force Base, University of New Mexico Hospital, Presbyterian Healthcare, Albuquerque International Sunport (cargo), New Mexico State University, White Sands Missile Range, Las Cruces Public Schools, Memorial Medical Center, MountainView Regional Medical Center, and Stahmann Farms. Fleets serving operations at that scale do not measure a breakdown in hours, they measure it in missed docks, which is the standard our response times are held to.
