Every major truck brand has its own common failure points, its own diagnostic connectors, and its own quirks that a mechanic needs to know before they ever open the hood. Road Rescue Network dispatches mobile technicians familiar with the specific platforms that make up most of the North American fleet, from Freightliner's Cascadia and Columbia to Peterbilt's 379 and 579, Kenworth's T680 and T880, Volvo's VNL line, and International's day cab and sleeper models.

Freightliner Cascadia, Columbia, and M2

The Freightliner Cascadia is the best-selling heavy duty truck in North America, and its Detroit DD13, DD15, and DD16 engines are known for generally strong reliability, but common issues mobile techs see include DEF system faults, EGR cooler leaks, and electrical gremlins in the truck's extensive multiplexed wiring system. The older Columbia model, still common on the road, tends to show more conventional mechanical wear in the clutch and transmission compared to the Cascadia's automated systems.

The Freightliner M2, a popular medium duty platform used for box trucks and vocational work, commonly needs brake and suspension attention given its stop-and-go duty cycle, along with the same DEF and emissions sensor issues that affect the larger Cascadia.

Peterbilt 379 and 579

The Peterbilt 379, a classic conventional long-nose truck still favored by many owner-operators, is known for its durability but, being an older platform for many units on the road today, often needs attention to its cooling system, clutch, and electrical wiring as components age. The newer 579 model runs a more modern electronic platform with Paccar or Cummins engine options, and common service calls involve its aftertreatment system and its electronic dash and gauge cluster.

Kenworth T680, T880, and Volvo VNL

The Kenworth T680 is built on the same Paccar platform as the Peterbilt 579 and shares many of the same common service points, particularly around its aerodynamic bodywork and aftertreatment system, while the T880, a vocational heavy-haul model, more often needs heavy suspension and drivetrain work given its construction and hauling use cases.

Volvo's VNL line runs Volvo's own D13 engine and I-Shift automated manual transmission, and mobile techs most commonly see I-Shift clutch actuator issues and the same DEF and emissions sensor faults common across all modern diesel platforms. International's trucks, running Cummins or Navistar engines depending on model year, see similar patterns, with electrical and emissions system faults topping the list of roadside calls.
